Why a child's garden preschool?

A CHILD’S GARDEN PRESCHOOL was Established in 1985 and was the first tenant in the newly built Strathcona Community Centre.

We opened our doors to meet the needs of local families for high quality childcare. Our play based programs reflect our philosophy that natures way of learning thru play is the least stressful and most successful way to introduce a learning environment. Positive interactions between children and their environment are essential for healthy development. The brain is built like a house through a step-by-step process that begins with the foundation. A strong foundation creates a sound structure.

Our name A Child’s Garden is a direct translation of the German word kindergarten. Fredrick Frobel, an early educator, who is known as the “Father of Play”, established the first kindergarten in 1840. We believe that a child, like a seed will grow, develop and bloom in an atmosphere where they are loved and nurtured. Our school has a strong reputation offering an environment where a child’s natural desire to play is carefully combined with lesson plans crafted to prepare them for kindergarten. Our two year programs are specifically designed to build on and complement each other. Each, building your child’s confidence and self-esteem, while teaching the fundamentals they will need, to ensure they have a smooth start into kindergarten. Creating a hunger for learning that will set your child on the Garden Path for a life-long love of learning.

We opened our preschool in Strathcona in 1985 and have successfully taught and educated preschoolers ever since. Our teachers are highly qualified, experienced and provide a safe, warm and comfortable atmosphere, where children can grow and develop physically, socially, emotionally and intellectually. We offer lots of free play, stories, songs, physical education, arts & crafts, drama, creative movement, readiness activities (numbers and letters) as well as special guests and a variety of field trips. We try to create a balance between high energy activities, quiet times and times of creative self expression and group activities. A variety of materials and activities are offered each day to provide for the individual needs of each child. Our school is a nut–free environment.

We offer programs for 3 year olds every Tuesday and Thursday, half days or full days.

For 4 & 5 year olds 3 days or 5 days a week. Half days or full days. Teacher/student ratio is 1:10 for 4 & 5 year olds and 1:8 for 3 year olds.

A maximum of 20 children per class with two teachers is maintained.

Our classrooms are bright and cheerful with lots of natural light. We have a variety of different learning centres in each classroom: a housekeeping centre for role playing, paint centre, library centre, play-dough centre, water/sand tables, floor toys, block centre, craft centre and puzzle centre, to name a few. Our preschool also features a large fenced outdoor playground and a spacious gymnasium.

A Child's Garden Preschool is a locally owned and operated company and has been offering high quality programs for the last 40 years. We are welcoming 2nd and 3rd generation children. Our long term, teachers have years of experience and are dedicated to maintaining our high standards in early childhood development. We provide high quality play based programs focusing on building the whole child thru social awareness, a healthy self esteem and age appropriate academic competence in preparation for kindergarten. Our mission is for children to graduate our programs with a strong love of learning and self confidence, having achieved their fullest individual potentials. We give children a taste for the academics in a way that will make them hungry for more and set them on the path of life long learning.

We Are Unique

Our proven successful curriculum creates a balance between high energy activities and quiet times, creative self-expression and group activities, our Pre-School meets the individual needs of each child. Outdoor physical activity is an important part of our program. A healthy body aids a healthy mind. We have access to a large indoor gym for those days when the weather does not cooperate. Field trips, concerts, special events and guests all add to our days jam packed full of activities.
